  1. Sundaram Ravi inducted into ICC Elite Panel of Umpires
    • India’s Sundaram Ravi was on Thursday inducted into the Elite Panel of International Cricket Council (ICC) Umpires for 2015-2016.
    • New Zealand’s Chris Gaffaney and Ravi were promoted from the International Panel to the Elite Panel. They replaced Kiwi Billy Bowden and the retiring Steve Davis, the ICC said.
    • The Elite Panel of ICC Umpires for 2015-2016 would now feature Aleem Dar, Kumar Dharmasena, Marais Erasmus, Gaffaney, Ian Gould, Richard Illingworth, Richard Kettleborough, Nigel Llong, Ravi, Paul Reiffel, Rod Tucker and Bruce Oxenford.
    • Ravi has umpired in six Tests, 24 ODIs and 12 T20Is, since making his international debut in Visakhapatnam in December 2011 in an ODI between India and the West Indies.
  2. Poovamma, Joseph win silver medals in Asian Athletics Championships
    • Machettira Raju Poovamma and Liksy Joseph won silver each as India added four medals on the second day of the 21st Asian Athletics Championships.
    • Poovamma, who had also won silver in the last edition in 2013, clocked 53.07 seconds in women’s 400m finals to finish second behind China’s Yang Huizhen (52.37) and was followed by Anastasiya Kudinova (53.41) of Kazakhstan.
    • Joseph, who was trailing at sixth place at the end of opening day on Wednesday, cleared 6.19m in long jump on Thursday to move up to third place.
  3. India loses poultry case against U.S. at WTO
    • India has lost a case at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) as the body on Thursday ruled that the Indian ban on import of poultry meat, eggs and live pigs from the U.S. was “inconsistent” with the international norms.
    • India will have 12-18 months to implement this ruling, after which the U.S. can begin exports of these products to India.
    • India had banned imports of various agriculture products including poultry meat and eggs from the US in 2007. These poultry products were banned as a precautionary measure to prevent outbreaks of Avian Influenza and bird flu fears.
    • The appellate body also upheld the panel’s findings that India’s AI measures are neither “based on”, nor “conform to,” the relevant international standard.
  4. World Environment Day observed on 5th June
    • Every year World Environment Day (WED) is observed on 05 June to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth.
    • The theme for year 2015 is Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care. The theme highlights the need to respect the carrying capacity of the planet earth and to manage natural resources efficiently to ensure prosperity and well being globally.
    • To mark this day Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a tree plantation campaign across India by planting Kadamb sapling at the lawns of his Race Course Road residence.

  5. Delhi Metro gets its first driver less train from Korea
    • Delhi Metro has received its first driver-less train, equipped with several advanced features, from a Korea-based manufacturer.
    • The six-coach train that was ferried to India by sea, arrived at Gujarat’s Mundhra port and was brought by road to Delhi on specially-made trailers.
    • A total of 20 such train sets of Hyundai Rotem will be manufactured in South Korea’s Changwan by the end of this year while the remaining 61 are being manufactured at the Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) plant in Bengaluru, the DMRC said.
  6. Infosys appoints Seshasayee as Chairman
    • Infosys Limited on Friday announced that the Company’s Board have approved the appointment of R. Seshasayee as Non-Executive Chairman of the Board with immediate effect.
    • A release from the Company added that K.V. Kamath will be stepping down from his position as Chairman of the Board and as an Independent Director of the Company, consequent to his nomination as President of the BRICS New Development Bank.
    • Mr. Seshasayee has been an Independent Director on the Company’s Board since January 2011 and is the chairperson of the Audit Committee.
  7. Essel, Rajasthan government ink Rs 4k crore pact for solar parks
    • Diversified conglomerate Essel Group has formed a 50:50 joint venture (JV) with the Rajasthan government to set up solar parks in the state.
    • The solar parks will be set up in Bikaner and Jaisalmer regions with an investment of Rs 4,000 crore.
    • Essel Group and Rajasthan government will hold a 50:50 stake in the JV firm — Essel Saurya Urja Company of Rajasthan Limited (ESUCRL) — which will develop solar parks that would produce 5,000 MW of clean energy.
