  1. BCCI Annual Awards announced: Virat Kohli and Mithali Raj named cricketers of the year
    • India’s Test captain Virat Kohli will be presented Polly Umrigar Award, given to the cricketer of the year, at the Annual BCCI Awards Ceremony
    • Apart from Kohli, former India wicket-keeper, Syed Kirmani, will be presented with the Col. CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.
    • Mithali Raj will be presented M.A. Chidambaram Trophy for Best Woman Cricketer of 2014-15 in the senior category while Devika Vaidya will be awarded from the junior category.
    • Robin Uthappa will be awarded Madhavrao Scindia Award for highest scorer in the Ranji Trophy (2014-15) while R Vinay Kumar and Shardul Thakur will be presented awards for taking highest wickets.

  2. Indian-origin cancer expert Harpal Singh Kumar knighted by the Queen
    • Cancer expert Harpal Singh Kumar, whose parents fled to India from Pakistan during partition and later moved to Britain, on Thursday received a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II for his “influential” work in the annual New Year’s Honours list that includes several other Indian-origin individuals.
    • Cambridge and Harvard-educated Kumar, 50, is the chief executive officer of the prominent charity organisation, Cancer Research UK (CRUK).
    • The citation accompanying his knighthood said that he “has been hugely influential in promoting research into the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and cancer care. CRUK’s income and research spend are at an all-time high”.
  3. DAVA project wins 2015 eASIA Award
    • The Department of Commerces DAVA (Drug Authentication and Verification Application) project has won the 2015 eASIA Award under Trade Facilitation category
    • DAVA project launched on June 29, 2015 created an integrated platform for implementation of the Track and Trace system both for exports and domestic markets of Drugs and Pharmaceuticals.
    • The DAVA project is an initiative of Government of India which aims to cover all the drugs manufactured in India.
    • When fully implemented, the export of fake or spurious drug from the country, will not be possible and in case it happens it would be easily traceable.
  4. Hockey: Bjorn Isberg named tournament director
    • Sweden’s Bjorn Isberg on Wednesday was named the tournament director of the fourth edition of the Hockey India League (HIL) that will be held across six venues in India from January 18 to February 21.
    • The tournament will witness six franchises — Jaypee Punjab Warriors, Delhi Waveriders, Kalinga Lancers, Uttar Pradesh Wizards, Dabang Mumbai and defending champions Ranchi Rays — battling for supremacy.
    • Scottish Andy Mair has been appointed as the umpire’s manager while Muthukumar Balakrisnan from Malaysia will don the role of assistant tournament director, announced Hockey India (HI).
