  1. M.O. Garg takes charge as director general of CSIR
    • M.O. Garg has assumed charge as director general of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR).
    • A chemical engineer, Garg was director, CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum (CSIR-IIP), Dehradun, for the past 11 years.
    • He replaced incumbent P.S. Ahuja, who was director, CSIR- Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology.
  2. Saeed Ajmal’s action cleared by ICC
    • Pakistan offspinner Saeed Ajmal received a huge boost as his action was cleared by International Cricket Council (ICC).
    • ICC also cleared the action of Bangladesh’s Sohag Gazi.
    • This could lead the top-ranked bowler in the world play at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
    • In September last year, ICC had confirmed that an independent analysis had found the bowling action of Saeed Ajmal to be illegal, and placed him under suspension from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect.
  3. ‘Amogh’ boost for security off Odisha coast
    • In order to strengthen security in the eastern coast of the country, Indian Coast Guard today inducted high speed patrolling ship Amogh into its fleet of patrolling ships stationed off Paradip coast in Odisha.
    • With the induction of Amogh, the number of patrolling ships under the command of the Indian Coast Guard has now risen to six.
    • In comparison to the other ships in the fleet, Amogh has ultra-modern facilities in it and can travel at a speed of 63 km per hour.
  4. Haryana selects Wipro for e-services support
    • Haryana government has tied up with Wipro for computerisation of all tax processes and rolling out 26 e-modules in order to provide various e-services covering registration, refund, payment and others.
    • This would lead to hassle free communication between dealer and department and reduce incidences of tax evasion.

  5. Delhi went for polls today; 67.08% voter turnout registered
    • Delhi went for polls today with final voter turnout was 67.08%, 89 lakh voters exercised their franchise.
    • Exit polls put AAP past the halfway mark, with the third giving those 35 out of 70 seats.
  6. Injured Ishant Sharma ruled out of World Cup, Mohit Sharma to replace him
    • India’s senior-most pacer Ishant Sharma was on Saturday ruled out of the Cricket World Cup owing to a knee injury after he was the only one among the four injured cricketers who failed in the fitness test.
    • Rohit Sharma (hamstring), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (ankle) and Ravindra Jadeja (shoulder) have passed the fitness test.
    • Mohit Sharma will be inducted into the World Cup squad.

  7. JD(U) sacks Jitan Ram Manjhi; elects Nitish Kumar as new leader
    • Sidelining defiant Jitan Ram Manjhi who has refused to step down, JD(U) Legislature Party today elected Nitish Kumar as its leader who will stake claim to form government in Bihar.
    • Kumar had resigned in the wake of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, taking ‘moral responsibility’ for the poor performance of the JD(U) in the state.
    • Manjhi proposed for dissolving the Assembly was supported by seven ministers besides Manjhi, while 21 pro-Nitish Kumar ministers opposed it.

  8. Reliance Jio president Sumit Chowdhury quits
    • Telecom operator Reliance Jio Infocomm President Sumit D. Chowdhury has resigned from the company to start his own venture.
    • “I have quit to start my own venture. It is in the field of smart cities,” Mr. Chowdhury told.
  9. Kolkata Becomes India’s First WiFi Metro City
    • Powered by Reliance Jio network, Kolkata has become the first Indian city to have 100% WiFi connectivity on 4G speed.
    • Right now the service has been launched at the posh Park Street and surrounding areas such as Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, Loudon Street, Russell Street and Little Russell Street.
    • This WiFi service across Kolkata would be unlimited and completely free for the whole year.
