Rekha conferred with Yash Chopra Memorial award

  • Veteran Bollywood actress Rekha was honoured with the third Yash Chopra Memorial Award in Mumbai on January 25
  • Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao presented the award to the actress in recognition of her talent and contribution to the film industry.
  • The award has been instituted by the TSR Foundation of T Subbarami Reddy in the memory of the producer-director Yash Chopra, who died in 2012.
  • The Foundation annually honours a distinguished senior film personality for outstanding contribution to film industry with a Gold Medal and a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh.
  • Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar and megastar Amitabh Bachchan had also been felicitated with the award.

West Indies’ Shivnarine Chanderpaul retires from international cricket

  • The West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul has announced his retirement from international cricket.
  • The 41-year-old from Guyana, who made his debut against England in 1994, amassed more than 20,000 runs in the three forms of the game.
  • His final game was against England in Barbados in May last year and he was dropped for the following Test series against Australia, with the West Indies Cricket Board wanting to give younger players a chance.
  • He had been a mainstay of the West Indies side for 21 years, making 164 Test appearances and is seventh in the all-time Test run-scorers list with 11,867, one place below his countryman Brian Lara. He scored 30 Test centuries at an average of 51.37 and also picked up nine wickets

Transparency International released Corruption Perceptions Index 2015

  • Transparency International has released the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2015.
  • The Index measured the perceived levels of public sector corruption in 168 countries and territories across the world.
  • While Denmark, with rank 1, was adjudged as the most corruption-free country among the surveyed countries, India was placed at the 76th place with 38 points.
  • India was at the 85th position among the 175 countries surveyed in the CPI 2014.
  • At the bottom of the list were Angola (163), South Sudan (163), Sudan (165), Afghanistan (166) and North Korea and Somalia shared the last place at 167 with a score of 8 each.

FIH announces winners of the Hockey Stars Awards 2015

  • The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has announced the winners of its Hockey Stars awards for 2015, which sees Netherlands pair Lidewij Welten and Robert Van der Horst pick up the Player of the Year awards.
  • Netherlands made it a hatrick of award wins as Joyce Sombroek picked up the women’s Goalkeeper of the Year for the second year in a row, while Ireland’s David Harte won the men’s Goalkeeper of the Year.

Marvin Minsky, Pioneer in Artificial Intelligence, Dies at 88

  • Marvin Minsky, who combined a scientist’s thirst for knowledge with a philosopher’s quest for truth as a pioneering explorer of artificial intelligence, work that helped inspire the creation of the personal computer and the Internet. He was 88.
  • Well before the advent of the microprocessor and the supercomputer, Professor Minsky, a revered computer science educator at M.I.T., laid the foundation for the field of artificial intelligence by demonstrating the possibilities of imparting common-sense reasoning to computers.
  • Professor Minsky, in 1959, co-founded the M.I.T. Artificial Intelligence Project (later the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory) with his colleague John McCarthy, who is credited with coining the term “artificial intelligence.”

  • वेस्टइंडीज के दिग्गज बल्लेबाज और टेस्ट इतिहास में सर्वाधिक रन बनाने वाले बल्लेबाजों की सूची में सातवें नंबर पर काबिज शिवनारायण चंद्रपॉल ने अपने पदार्पण के 22 साल बाद अंतरराष्ट्रीय क्रिकेट को अलविदा कह दिया है।
  • इस 41 वर्षीय पूर्व कप्तान ने अपने टेस्ट करियर में 11867 रन बनाये जो वेस्टइंडीज की तरफ से सर्वाधिक रन बनाने वाले ब्रायन लारा की रन संख्या से केवल 86 रन कम है।
  • बायें हाथ के इस जुझारू बल्लेबाज ने 1994 में गयाना में इंग्लैंड के खिलाफ अपने टेस्ट करियर की शुरुआत की थी। उन्होंने तब शतक जमाया और वेस्टइंडीज ने वह मैच पारी और 44 रन से जीता था।

  • ट्रांसपेरेंसी इंटरनेशनल भ्रष्टाचार धारणाएं सूचकांक (सीपीआई) 2015 जारी किया है।
  • सूचकांक दुनिया भर में 168 देशों और क्षेत्रों में सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र के भ्रष्टाचार के कथित स्तर को मापने।
  • डेनमार्क, रैंक 1 के साथ, सर्वेक्षण देशों के बीच सबसे अधिक भ्रष्टाचार मुक्त देश के रूप में घोषित किया गया है, जबकि भारत 38 अंकों के साथ 76 वें स्थान पर रखा गया था।
